Multiple Reconnection X‐Lines at the Magnetopause and Overlapping Cusp Ion Injections

چکیده
Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) observations during an extended crossing of the Earth's dayside magnetopause show evidence multiple reconnections at boundary. This occurred when Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) was southward and had a significant BY component. Approximately 2 hr after this crossing, Twin Rocket Investigation Cusp Electrodynamics-2 rockets were launched into northern hemisphere cusp observed overlapping ion injections. These injections are also magnetopause. Observations more than apart do not constitute conjunction between spacecraft rockets. However, IMF conditions traversal very similar. Therefore, crossings traversals same time, would have been Thus, these two events illustrate link

The Variation of Reconnection Rate at the Dayside Magnetopause and Cusp Ion Precipitation
A method is presented which allows estimation of the variation of the rate of magnetic reconnection at the dayside magnetopause. This is achieved using observations of the cusp particle precipitation made by low-altitude polar-orbiting spacecraft. In this paper we apply the technique to a previously published example of a cusp intersection by the DMSP F7 satellite. It is shown that the cusp sig...
متن کاملCluster observation of continuous reconnection at dayside magnetopause in the vicinity of cusp
In this paper, we present a case study of continuous reconnection at the dayside magnetopause observed by the Cluster spacecraft. On 1 April 2003, the four Cluster spacecraft experienced multiple encounters with the Earth’s dayside magnetopause under a fairly stable southwestward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). Accelerated plasma flows, whose magnitude and direction are consistent with the...
متن کاملMagnetic reconnection and cold plasma at the magnetopause
[1] We report on detailed observations by the four Cluster spacecraft of magnetic reconnection and a Flux Transfer Event (FTE) at the magnetopause. We detect cold (eV) plasma at the magnetopause with two independent methods. We show that the cold ions can be essential for the electric field normal to the current sheet in the separatrix region at the edge of the FTE and for the associated accele...
متن کاملDistinguishing between pulsed and continuous reconnection at the dayside magnetopause
Magnetic reconnection has been established as the dominant mechanism by which magnetic fields in different regions change topology to create open magnetic field lines that allow energy and momentum to flow into the magnetosphere. One of the persistent problems of magnetic reconnection is the question of whether the process is continuous or intermittent and what input condition(s) might favor on...
متن کاملThe dependence of cusp ion signatures on the reconnection rate
The interpretation of structure in cusp ion dispersions is important for helping to understand the temporal and spatial structure of magnetopause reconnection. “Stepped” and “sawtooth” signatures have been shown to be caused by temporal variations in the reconnection rate under the same physical conditions for different satellite trajectories. The present paper shows that even for a single sate...
